The gap between current capability and theoretical limits becomes visible even when no one around you demonstrates those limits.
This is not natural. It requires fighting your perceptual system’s default operation—continuously redirecting from “how do I compare?” to “what can I actually do?”

Using objective standards means honestly evaluating your performance against absolute benchmarks rather than drifting toward comfortable social comparisons. It means asking “Can I actually do this?” and accepting the answer even when it’s unflattering.
The person surrounded by weaker peers must resist the automatic, metabolically cheap conclusion “I’m doing great” and instead force the more expensive evaluation: “By what objective standard am I measuring ‘great’? What would excellent actually look like? How far am I from that?”
This capacity for rigorous self-evaluation is itself a manifestation of high q(s)—the instrument quality being described. The ability to accurately assess yourself, especially when it reveals gaps, requires the same perceptual apparatus that accurate assessment generally requires.
Most people cannot sustain this level of scrutiny. The person who can maintain objective self-evaluation over years is rare. This capacity is likely as fixed as the other perceptual traits in the model—you either have the architecture to do harsh self-assessment or you don’t, and if you don’t, you probably can’t bootstrap your way there.
Peer Selection as Instrument Calibration
Because assessment is relative and valuation is state-dependent, peer environments function as external calibration devices. Your reference class determines what levels of performance you can even perceive as real. Surrounded by weak peers, both self-assessment and perceived upside inflate locally while global ceilings collapse. Surrounded by stronger peers, deficits and higher attractors become legible.
Peer choice therefore acts upstream of effort. It alters the effective measurement instrument q and the value discount λ without changing underlying skill. Selecting peers is selecting the gradient you experience.
